Brother Rice wins another state title
Birmingham Brother Rice lacrosse coach Rob Ambrose reminded his players often during the season that even though they wore the orange-and-white colors of Warriors teams of the past, they needed to establish their own legacy. The young Warriors did just that when they defeated Novi Catholic Central 16-10 in the Division 1 state final June 12 at Birmingham Seaholm.
 
Coming to a camp near you
The former Michigan State University and Detroit Pistons standout, who currently calls Pistons games along with George Blaha on Fox Sports Detroit, has spent many summers in gyms working with youths at different basketball camps.

Berkley High rugby establishes itself as one of the best in state
Twenty or so years ago, after just finishing up his studies at Wayne State University, Larry Vertel was in search of a contact sport. It just so happened that some pals of his had what he was looking for. “Some friends of mine were playing rugby and they recruited me, and I kind of fell in love with the sport,” he said. What lured Vertel to the game, along with contact, was the variety of skills needed to play well.

If anyone knows the Madison Heights Bishop Foley boys lacrosse program’s history and future, it’s Matt Filippis. Now in his fifth season as the Ventures’ head coach, the Troy native joined the program as an assistant coach in 1997 — a year after he ended his playing days and graduated from Foley.

The first inclination for Rochester United boys lacrosse coach Michael Dungan that this year wouldn’t be like any other came during the preseason. “I could just see how much the seniors wanted it and how much time they had invested,” he said. “It was a better quality of work. The Royal Oak High boys lacrosse team had just lost to Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett April 14 to fall to 1-3 overall. At the time, coach Tony Misuraca felt the season had hit rock bottom.

Phillip Arakelian remembers playing lacrosse and the various coaches that had an impact on him as a kid. Now in his first year as the Farmington High boys lacrosse coach, Arakelian is looking to make his own mark on the program. “If I can get the kids to play 100 percent all of the time, I’ll be happy,” he said.
