Brother Rice wins another state title
Birmingham Brother Rice lacrosse coach Rob Ambrose reminded his players often during the season that even though they wore the orange-and-white colors of Warriors teams of the past, they needed to establish their own legacy. The young Warriors did just that when they defeated Novi Catholic Central 16-10 in the Division 1 state final June 12 at Birmingham Seaholm.

The former Michigan State University and Detroit Pistons standout, who currently calls Pistons games along with George Blaha on Fox Sports Detroit, has spent many summers in gyms working with youths at different basketball camps.

Twenty or so years ago, after just finishing up his studies at Wayne State University, Larry Vertel was in search of a contact sport. It just so happened that some pals of his had what he was looking for. “Some friends of mine were playing rugby and they recruited me, and I kind of fell in love with the sport,” he said. What lured Vertel to the game, along with contact, was the variety of skills needed to play well.
